why does my battery drain while driving?

hi ive got a ford escort van. if i charge the battery then the van will start and run perfect. however when i leave it running for about half an hour then turn it off and then try to start it again the battery will be completely flat. it will still bump or jump start fine. ive also put a new battery in it. could it be a problem with the alternator? thanx ethan

There can be a problem with the alternator's regulator. It seems as if your alternator is not able to maintain the battery's charge while being in use.
